Albury City Council has approved a $1.98 million tender to upgrade the historic World War II Memorial Bowl on Monument Hill.
The contract has been awarded to locally-based firm Enviro Culture Services, which recently completed the upgrade of Fredericks Park.
The memorial bowl refurbishment aligns with Council’s World War II Memorial Bowl Master Plan, endorsed in May 2021, which outlines initiatives to enhance and preserve the site with input and support from the community and local RSL members.
It is being funded by Council in partnership with the NSW Government, which has contributed $740,000 through the Stronger Country Communities Fund.
The upgraded design includes replacing the dated playground equipment at the site, installing seating, paths and a shaded outdoor fitness area, as well as new plantings for shade and enhanced amenity. Most of the existing open lawn area will be retained for informal ball sports and other activities, with the stage area to be used for small events such as memorials, outdoor cinema sessions or live performances.
Mayor Kevin Mack said the project’s aim was to increase community use of the space while preserving its heritage significance.
“We’re looking forward to seeing this important piece of Albury’s history brought back to life with this upgrade,” he said.
Work on the refurbishment is expected to begin in the second half of 2025.
