Goulburn Mulwaree Council is continuing its plans for the proposed Goulburn Rail Trail, with renewed momentum following the reforming of the Rail Trail Steering Committee in early 2025.
Since reconvening, Council says the committee has made significant progress on concept designs that explore potential linkages between Goulburn’s existing shared pathways and riverwalk network and the disused railway corridor extending to Grey’s Siding. If realised, the project would transform the 24-kilometre corridor into a safe, accessible and scenic recreational trail for walking, cycling, running and general outdoor enjoyment.
The Rail Trail was added to Council’s Priority Projects list in 2024. While funding opportunities to progress the project to construction have not yet been secured, Council and the Steering Committee have continued important work behind the scenes, including discussions around long-term maintenance, land use considerations, privacy matters and biosecurity issues, Council said in a statement.
The proposed trail would traverse a diverse range of landscapes including natural bushland, productive farmland and heritage areas. It is envisioned as both a major tourism drawcard and a valued community asset, supporting recreation, active transport and broader regional economic growth.
Council previously secured NSW Government funding in 2023 through the Business Case and Strategy Development Fund to prepare a detailed Business Case and feasibility study, including a cost–benefit analysis.
Goulburn Rail Trail Steering Committee Chair, Councillor Bob Kirk, says the study findings were very encouraging.
“Rail trails have proven highly successful across Australia, and the Business Case confirms the potential economic and community benefits for our region,” Cr Kirk said.
“We’ve talked about this concept for some time, and now it’s important we actively engage with our community, so everyone has the opportunity to learn more and share their views.”
