City of Melville Council is calling for community input to shape its first Community Climate Action Plan, which aims to achieve net zero carbon emissions across the local government area by December 2050.
A community survey launched on Monday asks community members to provide feedback on how the City can support local climate action in homes, businesses, workplaces, schools, local sporting and community groups and throughout daily life.
“In recognition of the broad scope and impact of climate change on our community, Council declared a climate emergency and committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions city-wide by December 2050,” said Mayor, Katy Mair.
“By working with our community, we have the opportunity to harness local knowledge and initiatives to mitigate and adapt to climate change in our City.
“I encourage everyone to get involved and help shape how the City supports local climate action for sustainable, biodiverse and climate resilient communities into the future.”
The draft Community Climate Action Plan will also be informed by feedback from the City’s Climate Action Reference Group (CARG) – a group of 24 passionate people from across the City who met monthly since November 2022 to help develop ideas and voice priorities for climate action.
Priority action areas identified by CARG include energy, water, built environment, greening spaces, transport, waste and the circular economy, food and diet, and education and awareness.
“It has been especially inspiring to see the dedication and passion CARG members have brought to developing ideas and priority areas for climate action,” said Mayor Mair.
The development of a Community Climate Action Plan follows the release of the City’s Corporate Climate Action Plan in July 2023.
Feedback gathered through the current Community Climate Action Plan engagement will be reviewed by CARG and used to create a draft plan.
The draft Community Climate Action Plan will be advertised for public comment before being finalised and presented to Council for adoption and implementation.
