$1.9m rolled out for Shepparton road upgrades

$1.9 million has been allocated to deliver vital road safety upgrades on council-managed streets in Shepparton as part of the Victorian Government’s Safer Local Roads and Streets Program.

The upgrades will target streets in Shepparton North which are home to local schools and cater to higher-than-average pedestrian traffic.

In partnership with the Transport Accident Commission and Greater Shepparton City Council, the Government will deliver upgrades including the installation of two compact roundabouts on Rea Street in Shepparton, at the intersections of Rea Street and Maude Street and Rea Street and Clive Street.

The new roundabouts will make travelling through the two intersections safer for thousands of drivers each day and address their shared crash history, said Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Shane Sali.

“Greater Shepparton City Council has been working alongside the Victorian Government, Minister Melissa Horne, and the Transport Accident Commission on this strong partnership to deliver safer roads for our community,” the Mayor said.

“This funding will support vital upgrades on some of Shepparton’s busiest local streets which are home to several large schools – it is a significant investment in the safety and wellbeing of our residents.”

New speed humps will also be installed on Maude Street, Orr Street, Rea Street, Clive Street and Dunrobin Street to encourage safer speeds.

Three new raised pedestrian crossings on Orr Street, Harold Street and Rea Street will help get local students and their families to and from school safely, while a new raised pedestrian crossing will be constructed on Marungi Street and traffic calming measures will be installed on Bourchier Street (pictured) and Barker Avenue.

At both the Bourchier Street and Barker Avenue school crossings, bus-friendly asphalt speed cushions will be installed on the approaches to reduce vehicle approach speeds and improve safety.

Under the $210 million Safe Local Roads and Streets Program, the Government and the TAC are working with all 79 Victorian councils to identify, plan and deliver much-needed safety upgrades on the highest-risk local roads across every corner of the state between now and June 2027.

“We’re proud to be working with Greater Shepparton City Council to deliver these vital safety improvements and keep locals safe,” said Minister for Roads and Road Safety, Melissa Horne.

“Right across the state, we’re delivering the upgrades needed to make Victoria’s roads safer, regardless of who they’re managed by.”
