Work begins on $60 million Devonport sports complex

Devonport City Council has today marked the start of construction on the highly-anticipated $60 million Devonport Oval Sports Complex.

The complex plans include a three-court indoor community hall, a three-court show hall, outdoor courts, administration facilities and high-performance training facilities.

Mayor Alison Jarman said the redevelopment would transform not just the Devonport Oval, but the entire community.

“This is a once-in-a-generation project that reflects the strength of partnership between all levels of government, our community and St Lukes,” she said.

“The Devonport Oval Sports Complex will be a place where our young people can dream big, our clubs can grow, and our whole community can come together. I want to sincerely thank the Federal and State Governments for their significant support, which has made this vision a reality.”

Tasmanian Premier, Jeremy Rockliff said the project was the realisation of a vision crafted through extensive consultation with local sporting organisations, the Devonport City Council, the Australian Government, community groups and residents.

“It is thanks to the insight, feedback and hard work of so many that we are now breaking ground on this fantastic community sports project,” Premier Rockliff said.

“We are delivering for Tasmania, with this Sports Complex set to become a major economic driver for the region, generating an estimated $118 million in local economic activity.

“As well as being a boost for the local economy, the project will create more than 360 jobs during construction, providing valuable employment and upskilling opportunities.

“Together, we are delivering for generations of North West Coasters by investing in facilities that will service this region for decades.”

Minister for Sport, Nick Duigan, said the transformative project was set to become a game-changer for the state’s North West.

“The Tasmanian Government is investing about $30 million towards this $60 million Sporting Legacy Precinct,” Minister Duigan said.

“Breaking ground on the Devonport Oval today signifies more than just a new construction; it reflects our Government’s continued commitment to improving Tasmania’s community sporting infrastructure.

“Our Government is building the sporting facilities future generations will need. This development is the perfect example of our Government working together to move Tasmania forward.”

The project is expected to be completed in 2027.
