The NSW Investment Delivery Authority (IDA) has endorsed five new projects to help strengthen the state’s fuel security and resilience, including two projects in the Wagga Wagga Special Activation Precinct
Treasurer, Daniel Mookhey said the selected projects represent more than $1 billion in potential investment to help secure fuel supply, support jobs and make NSW better prepared for future global disruptions.
Together, the projects have the potential to diversify fuel supply, improve storage capacity and support alternative fuels in key sectors, he said.
“Fuel security is not only a national economic issue but also a fundamental cost-of-living pressure for households and businesses,” said Mr Mookhey.
“Global gyrations in oil prices and the flow on effect we’re seeing at the local bowser, have highlighted the need to increase our fuel resilience.”
In response to the IDA’s targeted fuel security round, the projects span:
- fuel storage infrastructure;
- renewable fuel production;
- heavy electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
Two projects are in the Wagga Wagga Special Activation Precinct (SAP), a master planned hub driving regional economic growth and jobs -Southern Oil Refining’s proposed waste oil re-refinery and Bomen Bioenergy’s planned biomethane production facility, which will use agricultural feedstock to produce renewable fuel and associated products.
The Government launched the fuel security round in June following growing concern about global fuel supply disruptions and the impact of fuel price volatility on households, businesses and essential services.
The round sought Expressions of Interest (EOIs) for commercially led projects valued at more than $100 million.
26 EOIs were received, while 24 submissions were made through the concurrent market sounding process. This has provided the NSW Government with valuable insights into emerging fuel security projects and barriers affecting future investment in the sector.
Minister for Industry and Trade Anoulack Chanthivong said industry had responded strongly to the targeted fuel security round.
“These five projects are exactly the kind of investments we want to see more of: commercially driven, future-focused and capable of strengthening our economic resilience,” said the Minister.
“At a time of global uncertainty, NSW is backing the infrastructure and industries that will secure supply chains, support jobs and keep our economy moving.
“The Investment Delivery Authority is helping turn major proposals into real projects faster, giving investors’ confidence that NSW is open for business and ready to partner with industry.”
The five projects endorsed by the IDA will now receive practical, non-financial support to remove delivery barriers, improve coordination across government and accelerate project delivery.
“These projects represent practical investments that will help ensure NSW is better prepared for the challenges of the future while supporting jobs and economic activity across the State,” said Minister for Planning and Public Spaces, Paul Scully.
“Recent global events have shown how quickly fuel supply disruptions overseas can affect communities and businesses here in NSW.
“Expanding fuel storage capacity and supporting new fuel infrastructure will help strengthen the resilience of our supply chains and improve our ability to respond to future disruptions.”
