Sydney’s Ku-ring-gai Council has launched a new education campaign encouraging e-bike riders to slow down, ring their bell and share the path.
The Ride Safe Ku-ring-gai campaign includes advertising and signage across the local area, reminding riders of their responsibilities.
Mayor, Kim Wheatley said e-bikes are a fun, easy and active way to get around, but their speed and quiet motors can pose a risk to others.
“Our shared paths and village centres are made for everyone and e-bikes are a wonderful way to get around, but because they’re fast and almost silent, they may take a pedestrian, dog or young child by surprise,” Mayor Wheatley said.
“Every person using our paths should feel safe and comfortable, whether they’re on foot, on a bike or pushing a pram.
“Our message is simple: slow down, ring your bell and share the path. A little courtesy goes a long way to keeping everyone safe.”
The campaign reminds riders of three simple rules:
- Slow down to walking pace when others are on the path.
- Ring your bell to let people know you’re approaching.
- Share the path and stay alert for sudden movement from people, pets or prams.
