Vigil for community rocked by crash tragedy

Hepburn Shire Council has offered its deepest condolences to the family and friends of those tragically killed and injured as a result of the horrific crash in Daylesford last night.

“We know there were many witnesses to the event, and that people are likely to be incredibly affected by all that they saw,” the Council said in a public statement to the community this afternoon.

“To those who assisted at the scene, we send our heartfelt thanks and gratitude.

“We encourage everyone to support one other during this very difficult time. Help is available via Lifeline on 13 11 14.”

The picturesque tourist town has been rocked by the events of Sunday evening, when an BMW SUV ploughed through a busy beer garden at Daylesford pub, leaving five dead and seven injured.

A six-year-old boy, two men aged in their 30s and a woman in her 40s died at the scene. A teenage girl who was airlifted to hospital, later died of her injuries.

“If you are in Daylesford today, we ask that you please be respectful around emergency services in the CBD area. Some detours remain in place.

“This is a terrible event for our close-knit community.”

The Council said it will continue to work with local groups and agencies to offer local support where possible.

It also announced its support for a vigil at the Daylesford Neighbourhood Centre from 6pm tonight. The vigil will be held behind the main building at 13 Camp Street.

“We invite the community to come together following the tragic events of the weekend. Everyone is warmly welcome.”

“There will be representatives from the Victorian Council of Churches, Daylesford Neighbourhood House and various agencies,” Council said.

Victorian Police are waiting to interview the 66-year-old Mt Macedon man who was behind the wheel of the SUV. He is currently undergoing treatment for minor wounds.

Police say he was breath tested at the scene of the crash and returned a negative result.
