Smart bins turning trash into cash for Brisbane charities

Trash can now be turned into cash for Brisbane charities with three new high-tech rubbish bins now installed in the CBD’s Queen Street Mall.

The new bins allow people to donate to Brisbane charities simply by recycling.

To donate, users simply scan the barcode of their container and, if it is recyclable, 10 cents per recycled item will be donated to the city’s charity, The Lord Mayor’s Charitable Trust.

“The Lord Mayor’s Charitable Trust is committed to giving back to those in need and supporting our most vulnerable residents,” said Lord Mayor, Adrian Schrinner.

“We know the iconic Queen Street Mall will be packed with Christmas shoppers, holiday makers and visitors over the summer break, and this exciting initiative will make giving back even easier.

“The charitable trust will receive 100% of the profits collected which can then assist people experiencing hardships such as homelessness, domestic and family violence or illness.

“We are so grateful for the generosity of our residents and with each and every donation made to the Trust, we can help change the lives of Brisbane’s residents now and into the future,” he said.

Since the 1950’s, The Lord Mayor’s Charitable Trust has been supporting the people of Brisbane through its grass root charities.

In the most recent Christmas Grant round, 94 Brisbane charities received a share of $250,000 worth of funding, grants and Christmas gifts.

The new smart bins have been developed by SULO and feature solar powered technology, which powers the recycling process.

“SULO MGB were presented with the challenge of developing a robust, fully stand-alone smart bin which would seamlessly integrate within the existing waste-and-resource-recovery-assets of Brisbane City, and we have developed a product we are proud to put our names to,” said General Manager Pact Reuse, Matthew Newman.

“These smart-bins not only encourage higher rates of container recycling (some of this recovered plastic makes its way into a new SULO wheely bins), but the donation proceeds aim to positively impact the wider Brisbane community.”

The new bins are located:

  • Outside the Wintergarden entrance
  • Outside the UpTown entrance
  • Outside EzyMart on Albert Street

“The Schrinner Council is committed to keeping our city clean and beautiful for residents and visitors to enjoy,” said Chair for City Standards Councillor, Sarah Hutton.

“Thanks to this fantastic new technology developed by SULO, those visiting the Queen Street Mall can dispose of their recycling quickly and sustainably, with the added bonus of donating to a good cause.”
