Rockhampton Regional Council is encouraging the community to roll up their sleeves and host a site this Clean Up Australia Day.
Waste Councillor, Shane Latcham said more residents were urgently needed to step up and clean up to help protect and conserve the local community.
“Clean Up Australia Day gives us an opportunity as a community to pitch in and help tackle Australia’s waste problems which have only been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic,” Cr Latcham said.
“It is more important than ever to get involved in Clean Up Australia Day this Sunday, 6 March.
“Our environment is experiencing the impact of the pandemic and this is an opportunity for us to make a difference together.
“As a result of the pandemic, we have seen a big surge in single-use plastics and unprecedented numbers of face masks and food packaging littering our community.
“It’s particularly disheartening to see litter and fast food packaging in and around our waterways and catchments.
“Every little bit counts which is why I’m calling on the people of Rockhampton to get on board and register a site today and get involved in this fantastic cause.”
Registration is easy, and all community-based participants receive a free Clean Up kit, containing gloves and bags and other resources, with packs for individuals, families or groups available.
“As an added incentive, the first 20 groups to register a clean-up site will get a BBQ voucher as well as a landfill disposal voucher or, alternatively, a visit from a waste collections truck to their site,” Cr Latcham said.
“I am planning on cleaning up around Moores Creek on Sunday 6 March and am looking forward to helping clean some of our waterways and natural habitats so that they can continue taking care of us for many years to come.”
