Revised Eight Mile Creek flood study adopted

Albury City Council has adopted the revised Eight Mile Creek Flood Study Review which will inform its decisions for land use planning and infrastructure provision in protecting life and property from flood impacts.

The study assesses flooding across the approximately 65km² Eight Mile Creek catchment within Albury’s primary growth area, using updated data and advanced computer modelling to map flood behaviour across a range of flood events.

Mayor, Kevin Mack said the adopted study represents an important step in planning for the area’s continued growth while improving community resilience to flooding.

“The revised flood study gives Council the most up-to-date information available to better understand current and future flood risks across Thurgoona and Wirlinga,” he said.

“As these communities continue to grow, it’s critical we use the best available science and modelling to support future land use planning, infrastructure delivery and emergency management.”

Mayor Mack thanked community members who participated in the consultation process during development of the study.

“Community feedback raised a range of broader matters for Council’s consideration, including drainage, infrastructure and future development concerns,” he said.

“While the feedback did not result in any changes to the technical flood study document, it has provided valuable context that will help inform future floodplain risk management and planning activities.”

The review was undertaken in response to significant advancements in flood modelling technology and substantial urban growth throughout the catchment since the initial Eight Mile Creek Flood Study in 2012.

The adopted study will now be used to inform future floodplain risk management activities, including updates to emergency management responses, planning controls, drainage strategies, and infrastructure maintenance and renewal planning.

The final Eight Mile Creek Flood Study Review is available on Albury City’s website and Engaging Albury platform.
