Sydneysiders are being invited to experience a powerful after-dark celebration of First Nations culture, creativity and connection at Sea Place on Country, taking place at La Perouse Headland on Friday 5 June and Saturday 6 June, from 5.30pm to 9pm.
Presented by Randwick City Council, the free, two-night event transforms one of Sydney’s most significant coastal sites into an immersive cultural experience, bringing together storytelling, digital art, music, film and community gathering under the stars.
Set against the backdrop of Kamay Botany Bay, the program highlights enduring connections to Country through contemporary and traditional expressions all told in first person by the La Perouse Community. Audiences will see the Macquarie Watchtower illuminated by a large-scale 360° projection artwork by Shane Youngberry, creating a striking visual centrepiece visible across the headland.

The event also features outdoor screenings of a new community-led documentary The Mullet Run on the La Perouse Museum lawn, exploring themes of culture, community and the long-standing relationship between First Nations peoples and Sea Country.
Inside the museum, visitors can experience newly launched exhibitions, including:
- LA+ 001 by Dr Peter McKenzie and Brenda Croft, showcasing photographic works spanning more than 60 years of life in the La Perouse Aboriginal community; and
- Contaminated: Site 3 by Norton Fredericks, examining environmental impacts on land and waterways through a contemporary art and science lens.
- Edge of the Earth by Anna Mould draws on pre-colonial European imaginings of Terra Australis Incognita, or the Unknown Southern Land, “waiting to be discovered” on the other side of the world.
Across both evenings, the program blends cultural experiences with a relaxed festival atmosphere, offering live music, DJs, fire pits, food trucks and a licensed bar.
Friday night will feature a formal opening with a Welcome to Country and remarks from Mayor Cr Dylan Parker and participating artists, followed by live performances and the official exhibition launch.
Saturday expands into a full community day-to-night program, beginning at 3.30 pm with a free BBQ and community bingo, before evening performances and screenings continue.
Mayor, Dylan Parker said the event offers an important opportunity for the broader Sydney community to engage with local Aboriginal culture in a meaningful and accessible way.
“Sea Place on Country is a celebration of the rich cultural heritage and living traditions of the La Perouse Aboriginal community. It invites people from across Sydney to come together, learn, and experience connection to Country in a unique coastal setting,” Mayor Parker said.
Visitors are encouraged to rug up, bring a torch and enjoy the headland after dark as it comes alive with stories, creativity and community connection.
