Plan released for $30.5m Alice Springs revitalisation

Revitalised parks, better roads and footpaths and a major skate and play precinct are some of the highlights of the Alice Springs Town Council Draft 2025/26 Municipal Plan and Budget, which opens for public comment from tomorrow.

The draft plan includes a record $30.5 million in capital expenditure to deliver improved liveability, safer infrastructure, and enhanced community spaces for Alice Springs residents.

Key projects for the upcoming financial year include the anticipated completion of the Newland Park Regional Skate and Play Precinct, $5.8 million towards upgrades to parks and sporting facilities – including significant works at Paul Fitzsimons Oval – and $2 million dedicated to improving roads andfootpaths across the municipality.

Council has also committed $750,000 to progressing a temporary library location as planning and design works continue for a new, purpose-built facility.

“This is a budget that’s focused on building a better future for Alice Springs,” Mayor Matt Paterson said.

“We’re proud to be delivering practical projects that improve daily life, whether that’s safer roads, more inclusive play spaces, or facilities that support lifelong learning.

“We’ve also kept in mind the challenges our community is facing. The rate increase this year ensures we can maintain and improve the services residents rely on, while planning for the future.”

A 4.7% increase to rates will apply in the 2025/26 financial year, which equates to approximately $1.45 per week on the minimum low density residential rate and $1.52 per week on the minimum commercial rate.

The Draft 2025/26 Municipal Plan will be available for public viewing and comment from tomorrow (1 May) on the Alice Springs Town Council website. Consultation will end on Thursday 29 May.
