Historic Brisbane site to be transformed into suburban lifestyle precinct

Brisbane City Council has approved plans for a new vibrant precinct to be delivered at the city’s historic Bulimba Barracks site.

Plans for the re-use of the historic Former Fabrication Workshop include a boutique supermarket, retail and hospitality venues and multi-use public spaces. An open central area for community events, pop-up shops, outdoor seating and dining spaces is also planned.

The site is part of the 20-hectare Bulimba Barracks Master Plan, which includes new homes, parks and playgrounds.

The site historically housed the Bulimba Army Base and was one of several war-time industrial sites along the Brisbane River.

The Fabrication Workshops were built in 1943 and used as defence facility but have since been vacant.

The re-use of this vacant, but historically significant, site will create a vibrant community space at Bulimba Barracks for residents now and into the future, the Council says.

“Brisbane is Australia’s lifestyle capital, and we’re committed to creating more to see and do in the suburbs,” said Lord Mayor, Adrian Schrinner.

“This new precinct will build on our record of supporting the creation of destinations like Howard Smith Wharves, West Village and Fish Lane which has helped shape Brisbane’s incredible lifestyle.

“Bulimba Barracks history will continue to be recognised while becoming a new lifestyle precinct that ensures our suburbs remains the best place to live, work and relax.”

Director of site developer, Shayher Group, John Lin, said it was important to complement the existing area.

“We have ensured the historical integrity of the workshop building, which will become a community hub for local residents and visitors with a focus on a mix of retail and food and beverage to complement the existing area,” he said.

“Shayher Group has already shown significant commitment to the master planned community through the commencement of its sitewide infrastructure project, which includes services, roadways, and parkland.

“This development will be a focal point along the Brisbane River, resulting in a beautiful, high-quality area for the Bulimba community to enjoy whilst respecting the historical value of this part of Brisbane and Queensland for generations to come.”
