New student-designed playground opens in St Marys

Penrith City Council has celebrated the opening of a new playspace at Monfarville Reserve in St Marys, designed in collaboration with local students as part of the Council’s Penrith Mayoral Challenge.

The Penrith Mayoral Challenge invites young people to create a new playspace within their community. Through a series of workshops with Council staff, the St Marys South Public School students developed skills in leadership, community engagement, teamwork, decision-making, budgeting and inclusion.

Mayor, Todd Carney said it was inspiring to see the creativity and teamwork the students displayed in their design skills and seeing it come together in the completed playspace.

“We are incredibly proud of the students for their dedication and hard work as they took on the challenge of helping design this new playspace with Council,” Mayor Carney said.

“The fun, thoughtful and imaginative design has created a playspace that will be enjoyed for years to come.”

The students’ designs have come to life with nature inspired play equipment for all ages as well as joey trampolines, swings, balance play and a yarning circle. New tree plantings provide shade and cooling, adding to the green space of the reserve. Additionally, shade structures, seating and an accessible picnic shelter were also installed.

This project was funded by Penrith City Council. Find out more at yoursaypenrith.com.au/monfarville.
