Leeton Shire Council has announed the start of construction on a lift at the Leeton Museum and Art Gallery (LMAG), which is set to enhance accessibility to the facility’s first floor for all visitors.
Construction begins this month with works to be undertaken by local contractors, Townsend Bros. Builders, and is expected to continue through to the end of June 2025.
Funded by the NSW Government in partnership with Leeton Shire Council, the project has received $197,244 in grant funding, with Council contributing a further $49,311.
The Council says the lift installation marks a significant step in making the LMAG more inclusive and accessible.
“These works are part of broader preparations for a major upcoming exhibition upstairs later this year,” the Council said.
Museum, Gallery & Heritage Coordinator, Karen Barrett said the upgrade was “about more than infrastructure”.
“Making the first floor accessible ensures that every visitor can fully experience what LMAG offers, now and into the future,” she said.
Deputy Mayor and Portfolio Lead for Arts and Culture, Councillor Michael Kidd, echoed these sentiments, adding, “This is a vital step in increasing the reach and richness of LMAG’s cultural offering.
“We want everyone in our community – regardless of age or mobility – to feel welcome and able to engage with LMAG’s incredible stories
and artistic programming. Enhancing accessibility is central to that vision,” he said.
