City of Darwin Council has welcomed Clarence McCarthy-Grogan (pictured) as the newly Elected Member for Chan Ward.
Cr McCarthy-Grogan joins the Council following the recent Chan Ward by-election, which was held after the resignation of former Councillor Ed Smelt, who was elected as the Member for Nightcliff.
Lord Mayor, Peter Styles said Cr McCarthy-Grogan would bring valuable experience and perspective to the Council.
“Local government plays a vital role in the daily lives of residents, and Elected Members have an important responsibility in helping guide the future of our city,” Lord Mayor Styles said.
“I look forward to working with Clarence as he represents the Chan Ward community and contributes to City of Darwin’s vision for a vibrant, inclusive and connected capital city.
“Clarence brings a fresh perspective and a strong track record of advocating for and supporting our community.
“His leadership, lived experience and commitment to inclusion will make him a valuable addition to City of Darwin,” he said.
Born and raised in Darwin, Mr McCarthy-Grogan is a disability advocate and former Australian representative wheelchair basketball player.
Through his work as a coach, youth mentor and community advocate, he has developed a strong commitment to accessibility, inclusion and creating opportunities for people of all backgrounds to participate in community life, the Council said in a statement.
Clarence will be formally inducted to City of Darwin at the next Ordinary Council Meeting on Tuesday 30 June.
