Griffith City Council is seeking the community’s assistance following multiple vehicle break-ins and damage to newly installed paid parking infrastructure at Griffith Regional Airport.
The infrastructure was recently installed as part of ongoing improvements to airport facilities and security and is currently undergoing testing prior to the introduction of paid parking.
Council’s Director Sustainable Development, Joe Rizzo said the incidents highlighted the broader impact of vandalism on the community.
“It is disappointing to see both vehicles and newly installed airport infrastructure targeted by vandals. These incidents create an unnecessary cost burden and divert funding away from other improvements that benefit airport users and the wider community. We encourage anyone with information to come forward and help ensure those responsible are held accountable,” Mr Rizzo said.
Additional CCTV cameras will be installed at the airport to strengthen security and help deter future incidents.
Council make every effort to provide a safe and secure environment for travellers, however passengers are encouraged to take precautions when leaving their vehicles at the airport, including removing valuables and ensuring vehicles are locked. As with any public parking facility, responsibility for vehicles and their contents remains with the owner, the Council said in a statement.
The Council is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the conviction of individuals responsible for vandalising Council property, with all information treated confidentially.
Anyone who witnessed suspicious activity at the airport, or who may have information regarding the incidents, is encouraged to contact Griffith Police or Griffith City Council.
