An upcoming Mornington Peninsula Shire Council hosted webinar will explore the pressures boys and men face living up to stereotypical and outdated rules of manhood.
The event is part of the Mornington Peninsula Communities Creating Change project aiming to explore how outdated gendered stereotypes are holding men and boys back from living healthy, happy and fulfilling lives.
“The ‘Man Box’ study conducted by Jesuit Social Services, The Men’s Project shows how men’s adherence to outdated stereotypes can lead to increased aggressive and controlling behaviour towards others and contribute to poorer physical and mental health for men and boys themselves,” Council said in a statement.
“Happier, healthier boys and men will result in safer, connected communities.
“The webinar will share the findings from the Man Box research and give hands-on advice on what you can do to make a change in your own life, or in the lives of those around you. The webinar will be especially beneficial for parents, carers, teachers, sports coaches and people working with young men and boys.”
Funded by VicHealth, Mornington Peninsula Shire has partnered with Family Life and Jesuit Social Services, with the provided event free for all to take part.
“We all want young boys in our community to have freedom to develop their own unique personalities and interests without the pressures of outdated rules of manhood,” said Mayor Despi O’Connor.
“But some need help and guidance along the way to be the best they can be. This webinar can help guide you on how to guide them.”
