Moreton Bay swimmers lap up pool season

New data from City of Moreton Bay Council shows residents and visitors are lapping up the city’s aquatic and leisure centres, with 1.578 million visits last financial year – an increase of 11.28% in just two years.

Released as Council’s new pool season gets underway, the data shows the City’s most frequented pools include Albany Creek Leisure Centre, Burpengary Regional Aquatic Leisure Centre, Ferny Hills Swimming Pool and Lawnton Swimming Complex.

Albany Creek Leisure Centre, Burpengary Regional Aquatic Leisure Centre, North Lakes Aquatic Centre, Ferny Hills Swimming Pool, Lawnton Swimming Complex and Settlement Cove Lagoon each had upwards of 130,000 visits during the 2024/25 financial year.

Mayor, Peter Flannery said it was great to see the community making the most of Council’s pool facilities.

“Our pool and leisure centres are accessible, affordable and offer something for everyone to enjoy with heated pools, Olympic-sized lap lanes, water slides, shallow play areas for toddlers, aqua aerobics classes and learn-to-swim sessions,” he said.

“Collectively, these facilities are rapidly growing in popularity, with patronage increasing by more than 160,000 in the past two years alone.

“Lawnton Swimming Complex had one of the biggest jumps in attendance figures, a reflection of the growing number of young families moving to the area and increased participation in learn-to-swim programs.”

Settlement Cove Lagoon at Redcliffe also continues to be a popular swimming spot, with nearly 150,000 visits recorded last financial year.

Council’s pool season officially kicked off on September 1, with longer opening hours coming into play until 30 April.

Mayor Flannery urged residents to grab their towels and togs – and make a splash at one of the City’s pools.

“Swimming is not only beneficial for physical and mental wellbeing, but a fun and affordable activity,” he said.

“It’s also a vital skill for staying safe around water, and there are learn-to-swim programs available at our pool facilities.

“We encourage residents to explore our pools make swimming a part of a healthy and active lifestyle over the warmer months.”
