City of Melville Council has taken another step towards its carbon neutral target with the introduction of four electric vehicles (EVs) to the Council’s carpool fleet.
The Council’s newly acquired BYD Dolphin and Atto 3 model EVs use renewable energy from on-site solar generation at the Civic Centre and Operations Centre, producing zero operational emissions and allowing the City to reduce CO2-e emissions by 8.1 tonnes annually.
Three dual chargers have been installed at the Civic Centre and Operations Centre for Fleet use, and an additional three chargers for shared use with the community, will be installed towards the end of this year, Council said.
“The introduction of our first electric vehicles (EVs) to our carpool fleet is a small but significant step towards meeting the City’s corporate climate action goals,” said Council CEO, Gail Bowman.
“Transitioning our staff carpool fleet from hybrid vehicles to electric vehicles aligns with our Corporate Climate Action Plan, moving us closer to our goal to be carbon neutral as an organisation by 2030.
“Electric vehicles produce zero operational emissions, utilising renewable energy from our on-site solar generation at Civic Centre and Operations Centre.
“The shift also reflects the booming market trend towards electric mobility, ensuring we lead by example in adopting low emission transportation solutions for our City’s fleet.”
The installation of charging infrastructure is supported by grant funding via the WA Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety’s Charge up Workplace Grant Program, and the ARENA Future Fuels program in collaboration with the State Government and WA Local Government Association.
The Council is set to release a Draft Community Climate Action Plan for public comment in July.
It says the Draft Plan has received tremendous support and input from the community and includes a range of actions to achieve net zero emissions across the local government area by 2050.Â
