Greater Dandenong Council Mayor, Lana Formoso, has today implored the Victorian Government to address safety issues on a busy local road following the tragic death of a two-year-old child yesterday.
The toddler died after being struck by a car on Stud Road in Dandenong North, outside the Dandenong basketball stadium and near a popular reserve.
“We’ve been calling for a safer pedestrian crossing here for many years, but we don’t feel the State Government has shared our sense of urgency. I wrote to the Minister for Roads in recent months on this matter, and I’ll be seeking a meeting with her soon,” Mayor Formoso said today.
“Once more, we implore the State Government to fund this project as a matter of urgency.”
She said Council was extremely saddened to hear of yesterday’s fatal traffic incident.
“We’re heart-broken to have lost a young member of the community i these horrific circumstances.”
“Our thoughts and sincere condolences are with the family and all those affected by this terrible loss.”
Police believe the two-year-old was attempting to cross the road with his father when he was hit and killed by a passing a ute. Paramedics performed CPR on the boy, but he died at the scene.
Mayor Formoso said Council had worked with the Department of Transport and Planning to produce a well-advanced design for traffic signals and much-needed pedestrian crossing facilities at the intersection of Stud Road and McFees Road where the fatal accident occurred on Sunday.
The driver, a 60-year-old Gippsland man, stopped at the scene and was assisting police with their enquiries.
