LGANT congratulates Councillor Kaye Thurlow on AM

The Local Government Association of the Northern Territory (LGANT) has congratulated Councillor Kaye Thurlow’s appointment as a Member (AM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia announced in the recent the King’s Birthday 2023 Honours list.

Councillor Thurlow (pictured), from East Arnhem Regional Council, received the prestigious title in recognition of her significant service to the Indigenous community of East Arnhem Land.

LGANT President, Kon Vatskalis, congratulated Councillor Thurlow on her long-standing tenure as a local government elected member of the East Arnhem Regional Council (since 2008) and the LGANT Executive (Board) from 2012-2016. Kaye was appointed as the LGANT representative of the Place Names Committee in 2021 and has also served on the NT Grant Commission.

“Local government is the sphere of government closest to the community and I personally thank Kaye for her valuable contribution to the sector and service to the community. I know that Kaye has always been forthright in her advocacy for fairness and equity for not only her community and council but for all Territorians over a very long time. The AM is fabulous recognition,” said President Vatskalis.

“Instrumental in driving positive change, capturing the attention and admiration of her colleagues and constituents alike, LGANT is extremely proud of one our own receiving national recognition in this way and highlighting the positive role local government councils perform with and for their people.”
