Forbes Shire Council says a new era for local sport has kicked off with the official opening of the new Spooner Oval Grandstand.
The new facility features a canteen, change rooms and amenities, dedicated media room, and an upstairs function space with accessible lift access, along with seating for up to 210 spectators. The significant upgrade enhances the sporting experience for players, officials, volunteers and spectators, ensuring Spooner Oval remains a leading regional sporting destination in Central West NSW, the Council said in a statement.
In a fitting tribute to the oval’s history, the grandstand was officially opened by NSW Minister for Local Government, Ron Hoenig, continuing a connection that dates back almost 90 years.
The original Spooner Grandstand was built in 1938 and officially opened in 1939 by the then Minister for Works and Local Government, Eric Spooner, whose support helped fund the development of the ground and inspired its name.

Mayor, Phyllis Miller OAM said the completion and opening of the project represented a major win for local sport and the wider community.
“Spooner Oval has been the stage for some of Forbes’ greatest sporting moments and community gatherings. The new grandstand provides facilities that reflect the passion our community has for sport and ensures local clubs have a venue that can meet modern expectations,” Mayor Miller said.
“Whether it’s local junior sport, rugby league, representative fixtures or major regional competitions, this investment strengthens Forbes’ ability to host quality events and support participation at every level.”
From its beginnings as a cricket ground and dog racing venue to its proud role as the home of the Forbes Magpies, Spooner Oval has been at the heart of local sport for generations.
Recognising the importance of preserving local history, the Council worked closely with the Forbes Heritage Committee, completed a detailed archival record of the original grandstand and incorporated selected elements from the historic structure into the new facility.

While the original grandstand held many cherished memories, it had reached the end of its useful life and was no longer suitable for the needs of a growing sporting precinct. The new grandstand provides a modern, accessible and fit-for-purpose facility that will support local sport and community events for years to come.
Designed by Craig McKinnon of McKinnon Designs and constructed by Hines Constructions, the new grandstand was positioned closer to the playing field, creating a stronger connection between spectators and the action while improving sightlines across the field.
The project has also earned industry recognition, with Hines Constructions awarded the Master Builders Association Western Regions Excellence in Building Award for Public Buildings (Under $5 Million). The award acknowledges the high standard of workmanship and construction delivered through the project, which now stands as a landmark sporting facility for Forbes and the wider region.
Funded through the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program and the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Communities Fund and Regional Sport Facility Fund, the project represents a long-term investment in the future of sport in Forbes.
