Latrobe council preschool records COVID case

Latrobe City Council has advised that a child who attends the Council-run Carinya Early Learning Centre in Morwell has tested positive for COVID-19.

Council says the affected child last attended the preschool on Tuesday 12 October. The child was considered to be infectious at the Centre from from 2pm to 5.17pm on this day.

“Council would like to acknowledge the proactive response by the impacted family. This has allowed Council to act on the advice ahead of formal notification, ensuring the safety of our community,” it said in a statement.

“We understand that this will be concerning for families whose children attend the Early Learning Centre and to our staff. Since being advised of the child’s attendance, management has contacted families and staff who accessed and worked at the Early Learning Centre on Tuesday 12 October who may be classed as close contacts.”

Council says that as a precautionary measure, the learning centre would be closed to all children and staff, on Wednesday 20 October. The closure will allow appropriate deep cleaning to occur, Council said.

“We understand and acknowledge that this is a time of heightened anxiety for us all.”

“We are committed to ensuring families and staff, who access the Carinya Early Learning Centre, receive further information and updates as we receive them.

“Families will be kept informed as to when the service will resume.  Council will await further advice from the Department of Health.

“We encourage families and staff to remain vigilant – monitor for symptoms and get tested if symptoms present,” Council said.
