Ku-ring-gai Council Mayor, Christine Kay, has welcomed the NSW Government’s announcement of $2.8 million funding to install 549 electric vehicle (EV) chargers across 22 LGAs, saying the switch to electric transport is a key component of the Council’s plan to reach net zero.
“Electric vehicles offer reduced fuel costs, lower maintenance costs, reduced air pollution and an improved driving experience,” Mayor Kay said.
“Despite the increase in EV ownership, it is estimated that 1-in-3 drivers across NSW do not have access to off-street parking to charge their vehicle.
“Our Council continues to invest in public EV charge points and also partners with other charge point operators to ensure everyone in our community who wants to make the switch to electric can have the right infrastructure to support them.”
Ku-ring-gai has one of the highest rates of EV adoption in NSW. The number of EVs increased by 150% in the LGA from June 2023 to June 2025.
In June 2025, EV registrations in Ku-ring-gai accounted for 5.1% of all registered vehicles – more than three times the state average of 1.6%.
The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) projects that there could be up to 21,404 EVs in Ku-ring-gai by 2030.
The Council has previously installed public EV chargers at Ku-ring-gai Aquatic and Fitness Centre, Turramurra Library, North Turramurra Recreation Area and Lindfield Village Green.
Construction for the Council’s four fast charging ports will begin next week in Turramurra by a private operator who received funding in a previous round of the grants program. Council is also currently working with the operator to install additional chargers in East Killara, Roseville and Wahroonga.
