Lane Cove Council reveals name for new recreation centre

Lane Cove Council has announced the official name of its new state-of-the-art sport and recreation facility which is set to be completed later this year.

Following community consultation earlier this year, Council received a wide range of naming suggestions for the new centre at 180 River Road, Lane Cove. Many submissions included Aboriginal words, inspiring Council to work with the Aboriginal Heritage Office (AHO) to select a name that celebrates and honours local Aboriginal culture – the Galuwa Recreation Centre.

After careful review and guidance from the AHO, Council says it chose the name ‘Galuwa’, meaning ‘to Climb’ in the Sydney Aboriginal language.

“The name Galuwa represents more than just a place to play sport,” said Mayor, Merri Southwood.

“It’s an invitation for our community to climb higher — in body, mind and spirit. We’re proud to acknowledge the Sydney Aboriginal language and create a space that inspires all ages to grow and connect.”

The Centre will feature eight multi-sport courts, four multi-purpose rooms, a bistro and outdoor dining, and a new golf pro shop and amenities. The facility is designed to cater to a wide range of activities, inviting people to challenge themselves, support each other, and rise together, the Mayor said.

She said the name ‘Galuwa’ reflects multiple layers of meaning:

  • Physical Challenge: Encouraging people to climb physically, whether on courts, in fitness programs, or through new sporting experiences.
  • Personal Growth: Inspiring individuals to rise to their personal best in health, wellbeing, and resilience.
  • Cultural Connection: Honouring Aboriginal language and heritage, integrating local stories and artworks to deepen community connection to Country.
  • Community Elevation: Providing a space where the community can come together, build bonds, and support one another.
  • Nature and Environment: Nestled among bushland and overlooking the golf course, the centre seamlessly connects people with nature.
