In a first for Ku-ring-gai Council, two female Councillors have been elected to lead the organisation.
Councillor Christine Kay will take the reins as Mayor, with Councillor Kim Wheatley elected as Deputy Mayor.
Mayor Kay, who was first elected to Council in 2018 and represents the St Ives ward, will serve a two-year term until September 2026. She previously served as Deputy Mayor from September 2023 to September 2024 and has represented Council on a number of committees.
Councillor Wheatley, who represents the Wahroonga ward and was first elected to Council in 2021, will serve a one-year term as Deputy Mayor.
Mayor Kay said she anticipated working closely with staff, the community and fellow Councillors on issues such as housing, environmental protection and delivering community services.
“It is an honour to have been elected Mayor at such an important time for Ku-ring-gai,” Mayor Kay said.
“I would like to thank outgoing Mayor Sam Ngai for his work in leading the Council’s response to the NSW Government’s planning reforms.
“The new Council will need to address some significant challenges over the coming months, and I intend to take a collaborative approach to working through these challenges.”
