A draft policy to protect Ku-ring-gai bushland from illegal waste dumping and encroachment by private property owners is on public exhibition for comment.
The Bushland Illegal Dumping & Encroachment policy has gone on public exhibition until 4 September, following endorsement by Ku-ring-gai Council at its July meeting.
The Council says the draft policy aims to better manage instances of illegal waste dumping in bushland areas and educate the community on the effects of dumping on the natural environment.
A second aim of the policy is to curtail the takeover of public land by private property owners through placing items such as garden furniture and plants on public land.
Actions identified by the policy are signage, community education including home visits, fencing, CCTV surveillance, revegetation of affected areas and monitoring of known hotspots by Council staff.
With 375 hectares of bushland bordered by three national parks, Ku-ring-gai Council has one of the largest areas of urban bushland to manage in Sydney.
The draft policy was recently updated to better align with the Council’s natural areas plans of management and compliance policies.
The policy can be viewed online at krg.nsw.gov.au/yoursay. Comments close at 5pm on Wednesday 4 September.
