Knox council seeks feedback on EV charging future

Knox City Council is seeking community feedback on the current and future needs for public Electric Vehicle (EV) chargers across the Local Government Area to help shape Council’s new Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Policy.

“We have identified a need to expand the EV charging network to help our community be more EV ready. This will provide many community benefits, including supporting more EV ownership, and reducing transport emissions,” Council said in a statement.

“Council is well placed to lead and facilitate the development of the EV charging network because Council manages a large number of public carparks and parking spaces.

“The new Policy will guide how we grow the EV charging network on Council-owned and managed land.”

The Council says it wants to hear from both EV and non-EV drivers, businesses, EV charging operators and residents to understand their thoughts about the initiative.

Knox has more than 25 public chargers, with Council owning and operating five public chargers at three locations (Knox City Council Civic Centre in Wantirna South, Fairpark Reserve in Ferntree Gully, and Knox Regional Netball Centre in Ferntree Gully).

The draft policy proposes that from 1 July 2025, Council will introduce a fee for Council-run EV chargers. The fees are designed to cover operational costs.
