Kiama Municipal Council will welcome Councillor-elect, Stan Jarrett, at next week’s Ordinary Meeting following his victory in the recent by-election.
After the last of the postal votes were submitted to the NSW Electoral Commission on Friday, Mr Jarrett emerged victorious from the 22 August poll by 202 votes over Michael Bowden, the only other candidate who nominated for the vacant post.
Mr Jarrett will be sworn in at the start of next Tuesday’s meeting before Councillors vote on the Mayor and Deputy Mayor for the remainder of the Council term.
Mayor, Cameron McDonald said the extremely close race reflected the way in which both candidates carried themselves during the by-election campaign.
“I congratulate Councillor-elect Jarrett on his victory and we look forward to him bringing his passion and strength onto Council,” he said.
“I would also like to thank Michael Bowden for standing for the vacant seat.
“Both candidates held a respectful campaign and they deserve enormous credit for the way in which they conducted themselves.”
Councillor-elect Jarrett received 6877 votes to Mr Bowden’s 6675 with 634 informal ballots.
Mr Bowden issued a statement earlier on Monday congratulating Councillor-elect Jarrett on his victory.
“It’s a significant responsibility and I know he’ll bring real commitment to the role,” said Mr Bowden.
