Hornsby Shire augments reality for fun creek protection adventure

Hornsby Shire families are being invited to dive into a unique outdoor adventure this summer that’s as fun as it is meaningful for the local environment.

For the first time, Hornsby Shire Council is using Augmented Reality to present ‘Hide and Go Creek’, an innovative, family-friendly activity designed to inspire families to explore local creeks, learn about the importance of protecting them, and take action to keep them healthy for the wildlife that calls them home.

At the heart of the activation is ‘Craig’ the freshwater spiny crayfish, a charismatic ambassador for Hornsby’s waterways. The Council says spiny crayfish are more than just fascinating creatures – they’re a vital indicator of creek health and a cornerstone of the local ecosystem.

“When creeks are polluted, crayfish suffer and so do all the animals that that depends on them for food like eels, frogs and even platypus,” the Council said in a statement.

To take part in Hide and Go Creek, participants use their smartphones to find augmented reality Craig the spiny crayfish hiding in five picturesque creek locations across Hornsby Shire and bring him to life.

Each stop along the way reveals fun facts about spiny crayfish and a simple action everyone can take to protect these habitats.

Participants visit all five locations to collect a different badge and pledge to become a ‘Crazy Creek Protector’.

The Council says creeks are under threat from stormwater pollution from grass clippings, dirt, leaves, pesticides, litter, and even pet waste that makes its way into stormwater drains in local streets and wash into creeks and rivers, harming wildlife.

“By making creeks relevant and valued, Hide and Go Creek aims to inspire care and commitment to simple everyday actions that make a big difference,” it said.

Mayor, Warren Waddell said the Shire was blessed with beautiful creeks and unique wildlife.

“And we all have a role to play in protecting them,” he said.

“Hide and Go Creek is a unique and fantastic way for families to get outdoors, have fun, and learn how simple actions can make a big difference to the health of our waterways.

“I encourage everyone to do their part to protect Craig and all his creek buddies by making the pledge to protect our creeks, reducing pollution and becoming a Crazy Creek Protector.”
