Hinchinbrook launches Recycle Mate App

Hinchinbrook Shire Council has partnered with Queensland’s Department of Environment, Science, and Innovation to launch Recycle Mate – an educational platform designed to help users identify the correct disposal methods for over 7,500 common household items.

The platform includes a user friendly interface that allows users to search for items by typing the product description, scanning a barcode, or using the AI-powered photo recognition feature. It also offers a comprehensive local guide tailored specifically to the Hinchinbrook region, providing detailed information on where and how to recycle or dispose of various items. Additionally, the integrated Community Map and Chatbot makes it easy to locate local recycling, reuse, and repair centres, ensuring that waste is handled in the most environmentally friendly way possible.

Councillor, Pat Lynch said the initiative was a significant step towards Council’s ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability and waste reduction.

“The average Australian household generates about 540kg of waste per year, and by recycling correctly, we can divert up to 50% of this waste from landfills, contributing significantly to a healthier environment.”

“I encourage all residents to explore this tool, whether through the app or the website, and to actively participate in keeping Hinchinbrook clean and green,” said Cr Lynch.
