Griffith council presents Freeman of the City award

Griffith City Council has officially conferred the prestigious title of Freeman of the City on Dr Narayanan Jayachandran (Dr Jaya), recognising his extraordinary contribution to the Griffith community.

Dr Jaya becomes the 16th individual to receive the honour since its inception in 1969. A highly respected and much-loved figure in Griffith, Dr Jaya was recognised at a civic reception held at Council Chambers on Thursday.

Recognised as Griffith’s 2024 Citizen of the Year, Dr Jaya’s unwavering commitment to the community spans decades, with dedicated service across healthcare, volunteering and community events.

Mayor, Doug Curran said the Freeman of the City is the highest honour Council can bestow and is awarded only in exceptional circumstances.

“This honour is not one Council gives lightly,” Mayor Curran said.

“Dr Jaya is a highly respected medical professional. His compassion, leadership and quiet dedication has touched countless lives.

“There are very few more deserving to join Griffith’s esteemed Freemen of the City than Dr Jaya.”

The title Freeman of the City is awarded to individuals who have demonstrated outstanding achievement and service to the community.

Recipients must meet strict criteria and have made a significant and lasting contribution to the life of the city, Council said in a statement.
