Goondiwindi charger to support Queensland EV highway

The Goondiwindi Region will provide a key charging site in support of the Queensland Government’s ambitious electric super highway.

Goondiwindi Regional Council says the State Government, in partnership with Yurika, has confirmed a new local electric vehicle (EV) charging site as part of the Queensland Electric Super Highway (QESH) project.

“The QESH Phase 3 EV installation of a charging station in the public carpark on the southern side of Bowen Street, between Herbert and McLean Streets, in Goondiwindi is now complete however; the station will not be operational until later in the year,” Council said in a statement.

It said the combination of AC and DC chargers managed and administered by Chargefox will permit battery vehicles to charge at different rates to allow uninhibited long-distance travel.

While the infrastructure and connection of the charging site are funded by the Queensland Government and Yurika, users will pay to charge their vehicles at 30 cents per kilowatt, the Council said.

Visitors to the Goondiwindi Region will have approximately 20 minutes to one hour to browse local businesses and visitor sites while waiting for their vehicle to fast-charge.

Councillor Jason Watts , who holds Council’s portfolio for Roads and Transport, said the fast chargers are typically installed in a convenient location near amenities, such as cafes, restaurants and shops.

“The site will allow users to easily charge their vehicle, enjoy a short break visiting local businesses and tourism operators, and prepare for a safe journey,” Cr Watts said.

“By adapting new technologies, we are now opening our region to the EV tourism market.”

The QESH Phase 3 will connect electric vehicle drivers across a range of routes – from Goondiwindi to Emerald, Brisbane to Mount Isa via the Dinosaur Trail locations, Cunnamulla to Barcaldine and Longreach to Cairns and will add an extra 24 locations to the network – delivering connections along the Queensland/NSW border with the planned charging station at Goondiwindi and another at Stanthorpe.
