City of Perth Council has been recognised on the world stage for its long-term vision to create a greener, cooler and more resilient city, with its Urban Greening Strategy named as one of three finalists in the AIPH World Green City Awards 2026.
The Council’s Strategy is a finalist in the Living Green for Urban Infrastructure and Liveability category.
The awards recognise cities that put plants and horticulture at the heart of urban development, celebrating measurable outcomes in resilience, public health, biodiversity, climate adaptation and liveability and showcasing how nature-led approaches can deliver practical, scalable solutions to shared urban challenges.
Lord Mayor, Bruce Reynolds said being named a global finalist was a proud moment for the City and testament to the hard work of teams right across the organisation.
“This is about making Perth a city you can actually feel more shade in summer, greener streets, and better spaces for people to spend time,” Lord Mayor Reynolds said.
The Living Green for Urban Infrastructure and Liveability category highlights initiatives that support nature-positive lifestyles for residents, visitors and businesses through well-planned, thoughtfully designed and carefully maintained urban environments.
The Urban Greening Strategy 2023–2036 sets a direction to expand tree canopy and green infrastructure across both public and private spaces – helping to increase shade, reduce urban heat, enhance biodiversity and improve overall community wellbeing.
The commitment is backed by increased investment in innovative initiatives, including the treatment and management of the Polyphagous Shot-Hole Borer and tree planting in challenging inner-city locations using engineered soil volumes and stormwater harvesting.
The Council is also delivering a range of Open Space Enhancement projects, with a strong focus on biodiversity, water sensitive urban design, cooling and more active, accessible spaces, including pocket parks that help fill gaps in the green network, revitalising heritage gardens and city squares.
