An Elsternwick apartment block has become the first in Victoria to install a shared solar battery system — setting a new benchmark for renewable energy in multi-dwelling buildings for the state.
Through Glen Eira City Council’s Solar Savers program and Solar Victoria’s Solar for Apartments program, 26 apartments have joined forces to install a rooftop solar array and a 50kWh shared battery, supported by a fair energy-sharing model for residents.
The system will generate more than 54 megawatt hours of clean electricity each year, reducing emissions and lowering power bills across the building.
Mayor, Luca Ragni said the project shows what can be achieved when the community and all levels of government work together on climate action.
“This initiative proves apartment residents can lead on climate action when the right programs are in place,” Mayor Ragni said.
“Projects like this will help Glen Eira meet our emissions reduction goals in the Climate Emergency Response Strategy 2025–2029 and demonstrate practical, local solutions.”
Victorian Minister for Energy and Resources, Lily D’Ambrosio said the Solar for Apartments program is delivering real savings.
“It’s great to see renters and apartment residents benefit from clean energy and save an average of $400–$500 a year on their energy bills,” Minister D’Ambrosio said.

Owners Corporation Chair, Peter Tregilgas said the project was about more than dollar savings.
“This wasn’t just about saving money — it was about showing that apartment residents can be part of Victoria’s clean energy future too,” said Mr Tregilgas.
“There’s an entire sector of residents in Victoria living in apartments who want to do their part, but they’re often told it’s too hard. This project says otherwise.”
The system was designed and installed by Specialised Solar and Electrical, showcasing how shared battery technology can be scaled for multi-residential buildings across Victoria.
Glen Eira’s Solar Savers program is now expanding to include heat pump hot water and split-system heating and cooling upgrades. The program is open to all residents, including renters, pensioners and low-income households.
Round three of Solar Victoria’s Solar for Apartments program is open, and residents may also be eligible for the Australian Government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program, offering up to 30 per cent off installation costs.
