Funding ready to go for FOGO bins

Western Australian councils will soon be able to apply for more funding to support the rollout of Food Organics Garden Organics (FOGO) bins.

From 1 July 2023, the WA Government’s $20 million Better Bins Plus: Go FOGO program will be open year-round.

Environment Minister, Reece Whitby said the State Government had strengthened its commitment to local governments by increasing the rates available from next month by up to $10 per household, to $15 or $25 per household. This will help councils transitioning to or improve the three-bin service until the funding program concludes in 2026, he said.

“The Cook Government has a target for all local governments in the Perth and Peel regions to adopt FOGO by 2025. The service is being used by 17 WA councils and a further 12 have committed to making the transition,” said Minister Whitby.

“These changes will give councils an even greater incentive to rollout FOGO. It will make it easier for local governments to plan, apply for and secure a grant.

“It’s encouraging to see so many local governments embrace the three-bin service, with some achieving recovery rates as high as 65%.

“We need more local governments to come onboard to help us reach our 2025 target. A simple change can have a significant impact on the environment,” he said.
