The Local Government Association of NSW (LGNSW) has expressed its sadness at the passing of former Lismore Mayor, Jenny Dowell OAM, who is being remembered as a respected and much-loved council leader who dedicated her life to serving her community.
The 75-year-old passed away yesterday surrounded by family members.
LGNSW President and Inner West Council Mayor, Darcy Byrne said Jenny Dowell (pictured) was an outstanding representative who exemplified what is best about local government.
“Jenny Dowell was a natural leader who brought people together, inspired those around her, and always put her community first,” President Byrne said.
“She was deeply respected across the sector, not just for her achievements, but for the way she made people feel – valued, heard and supported.
“Jenny served on Lismore City Council from 2004 to 2016, including eight years as Mayor, where she was a strong and thoughtful advocate for her community.
“After finishing her time at Council, Jenny worked for LGNSW as a highly experienced teacher, facilitator and educator.”
President Byrne said the former Mayor was known for her warmth, integrity and determination, and for her ability to lead with both compassion and clarity.
“Beyond her work in local government, Jenny made a lasting contribution through her tireless fundraising efforts and her commitment to supporting others,” he said.
“Her legacy is one of generosity, strength and a deep connection to the Lismore community that she served so proudly.
“On behalf of LGNSW, I extend our heartfelt condolences to Jenny’s husband Ron, her family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of knowing and working with her.”
In a statement, Lismore City Council echoed the state advocacy body’s condolences.
“We offer our sincere sympathies to her husband, Ron, her family, and all who knew her,” the Council said.
“During her time on Council, Jenny contributed to many important decisions and projects across the city, including securing funding for the new Lismore Regional Gallery building, where one of the gallery spaces is named in her honour.
“She also supported and strengthened Lismore’s sister city relationship with Yamato Takada, and was recognised by the Government of Japan with the Order of the Rising Sun for her contribution to that partnership.”
She was later awarded an Order of Australia Medal for service to local government and the Lismore community.
“Jenny remained active in community life following her time in office through mentoring, volunteering and regional leadership roles.”
A formal condolence motion will be moved at the next Council meeting in her honour, the Council confirmed.
