The Eyre Peninsula Local Government Association (EPLGA) has placed jetty funding at the forefront of its 2026 State Election priorities, calling on political parties and candidates to commit to doubling the State’s Jetties Renewal Program and reforming the contribution model.
Under the present model, councils are responsible for ongoing maintenance for many of the region’s jetties while ownership remains with the State Government, placing unsustainable financial pressure on small regional councils and towns, the Association says.
EPLGA Chair and Kimba District Mayor, Dean Johnson said coastal communities depend on safe, well-maintained jetties for fishing, tourism and everyday recreation but many of them are ageing and expensive to repair.
“Doubling the SA Jetties Renewal Program from $5 million to $10 million per year would be a smart investment in protecting regional jobs, supporting our tourism industry, and preserving our way of life,” he said.
“In addition, changing the contribution formula for future projects from 50:50 to 80/20 state/local government funding would significantly leverage the number of upgrades that could be delivered.”
President Johnson adds, “We’re ready to work constructively with all parties to deliver a lasting solution.”
“Sustainable jetty funding can’t wait another four years – now is the time for our local State Election candidates to show they value the Eyre Peninsula’s iconic coastal infrastructure.”
