EPLGA calls for digital shark detection trial

The Eyre Peninsula Local Government Association (EPLGA) is calling on the next South Australian Government to fund a digital shark detection and early warning system trialĀ for local beaches.

The state has experienced four shark-related fatalities since 2023, with three occurring on the Eyre Peninsula, underscoring the urgent need to strengthen coastal safety measures in a region defined by its coastline, said EPLGA President and Kimba District Council Mayor, Dean Johnson.

ā€œOur coastline is central to life on the Eyre Peninsula, but recent tragedies have highlighted that we need to do more to protect swimmers and surfers,ā€ President Johnson said.

ā€œA digital shark detection and early warning system would provide an additional layer of safety, using technology to deliver real-time information and alerts to beach users.ā€

While existing shark tagging programs generate valuable data, the information is not currently used for real-time public alerts, he said.

ā€œWe already have a strong foundation through shark tagging, but the missing link is real-time detection and communication.”

ā€œA digital system that uses smart buoys and AI-powered analytics could translate existing data into immediate, practical warnings for our communities.ā€

Under the EPLGA proposal, a trial would involve installing smart buoys at key Eyre Peninsula locations, integrated with the State’s shark tagging program and linked to established public alert platforms.

President Johnson said the Eyre Peninsula’s vast coastline and dispersed communities make it an ideal location for a targeted trial.

ā€œThis would be a practical, scalable investment in beach safety, tailored to the realities of regional South Australia,ā€ he said.

The EPLGA represents 11 councils across the Eyre Peninsula and is advocating for the digital shark detection trial as part of a broader package of regional priorities for the 2026 South Australian State Election. The full range of priorities can beĀ read here.
