Dubbo Mayor on indefinite leave

Dubbo Regional Council has issued a statement in relation to Mayor Ben Shields, stating the councillor had taken “indefinite medical leave”.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Council said Cr Shields (pictured) medical leave would be effective immediately.

“During this time, Councillor Shields and his family have asked that his privacy be respected,” the statement said.

“In his absence, Deputy Mayor Stephen Lawrence will act as Mayor.”

Cr Shields is reportedly in a serious condition after being rushed to hospital the same day.

Cr Lawrence and Cr John Ryan had earlier accused Cr Shields of failing to follow consultation protocols over a proposed Bunnings development.

A letter written on Wednesday and signed by councillors said Cr Shields’ colleagues no longer had confidence in him and his abilities to lead as Mayor.

“The council condemns and will not tolerate abuse of power, bullying, harassment, threats and intimidation,” the letter read.

“The council has no confidence in the Mayor and calls upon him to resign immediately as Mayor and from council and enable council to move forward in the best interests of the community.”
