Coogee NYE fireworks to honour Bondi victims

Fifteen solitary fireworks will light up the Coogee Beach skyline on New Year’s Eve in memory of the victims of the Bondi Beach terrorist attack, Randwick Mayor, Dylan Parker, has today announced.

The special tribute will take place at 9pm, ahead of the scheduled 15-minute Coogee Sparkles fireworks event.

In a statement, the Mayor said the Randwick City community had been deeply affected by the antisemitic attack on December 14 with four of the victims – 10-year-old Matilda, Tania Tretiak, Peter “Marzo” Meagher and Alexander Kleytman – connected with the Randwick area.

Mayor Parker said the tribute will acknowledge and pay respect to the lives lost and the impact on the community.

“This past month has brought deep heartbreak. My thoughts are with everyone affected – particularly members of the Jewish community – as they continue to grieve,” he said.

“This small, but meaningful tribute offers a moment of reflection, solidarity and hope.

“As the sky falls dark on New Year’s Eve, the memories of those we lost will light up for all to see bringing light and hope for the future.

“Light will always win over darkness, and through this tribute we can stand together as a community, remembering those we lost and wrapping our arms around all those who are grieving.”

Coogee Sparkles NYE fireworks is a family-friendly community celebration by Randwick City. Fireworks are launched at 9 pm from the north end of Coogee Beach at Dunningham Reserve and there are multiple vantage points around Goldstein Reserve, Grant Reserve, Trenerry Reserve Coogee Beach and Clovelly Beach.

Attendees are encouraged to arrive early, follow event guidelines and enjoy the evening safely with family and friends. The event is alcohol and glass free. There are no midnight fireworks.
