Community consultation is now open for Melbourne Water’s $28 million Reimagining Eumemmerring Creek Project that will see two kilometres of an underground piped and concreted section of Eumemmerring Creek transformed into a natural, open waterway.
City of Casey Mayor, Stefan Koomen said the project will not only bring water back to the surface, but enhance biodiversity, improve public open space, and create new recreation opportunities in the Doveton area.
“As a local resident of Doveton, I am excited to see Eumemmerring Creek transformed into a beautiful waterway,” Mayor Koomen said.
“This is a project for the people of Doveton, and we want to hear your voices. Now is the time for you to have your say and help shape the features and character of this natural space.
“Your ideas will help bring this vision to life, and I encourage the Doveton community to come along to one of the upcoming community sessions. If you can’t make a session, you can have your say via Melbourne Water’s Let’s Talk page, where you can also apply to join the Community Representative Workshop.”
Melbourne Water’s Reimagining Eumemmerring Creek is jointly funded by the Australian Government’s Natural Heritage Trust under the Urban Rivers and Catchments Program and Melbourne Water. The City of Casey Council will contribute to the project by delivering paths, seating, and platforms, with design for a shared path along the creek already underway.
“At Melbourne Water, we view this project as an invitation to breathe new life and purpose into an often-overlooked waterway,” said Melbourne Water Acting Executive General Manager Service and Asset Lifecycle, Sean Hanrahan.
“By uncovering Eumemmerring Creek, we’re not just improving stormwater management, we’re creating a dynamic green corridor where local schools can host outdoor lessons, wildlife can find a habitat corridor, and community art and cultural heritage can come alive through interpretive spaces.
“We look forward to working with Doveton and Eumemmerring residents, council partners and Traditional Owners to co-design features that reflect local stories, foster environmental stewardship and strengthen social connections. Together, we’ll deliver a resilient, multifunctional waterway that serves both people and nature for generations to come.”
