Alice Springs residents are being invited to have their say on concept designs for the new $20 million Alice Springs Public Library, with community consultation on the major project now officially open.
The concept designs offer the first look at what the new purpose-built library could look like, marking an exciting milestone in the delivery of a modern community space designed to meet the needs of Alice Springs now and into the future, said Alice Springs Mayor, Asta Hill.
“Libraries today are so much more than shelves of books, they are community spaces where people come to learn, connect, work, study and access important services,” said Mayor Hill.
“This is a major investment in Alice Springs, and we want the community to help shape what this next chapter looks like.
“We’ve listened to early feedback, and now we’re asking residents to take a look at the concept designs and tell us what they think before anything is finalised.
“Whether you’re a regular library user, a parent, a student, a senior, or someone who simply cares about the future of our town, this is your opportunity to have your say.”
The new library project is a $19.96 million project partnership between the Northern Territory Government and Alice Springs Town Council, with $14.96 funded by the Northern Territory Government and $5 million from the Council.
“We know how important the public library is to so many people in our town as a place to learn, connect, and access services,” said Local Member for Braitling and NT Minister for Lands, Planning and Environment, Joshua Burgoyne.
“Opening consultation on these concept designs is an important step forward in delivering the new Alice Springs Public Library, which our government is proud to contribute $14.96 million towards.
“We encourage everyone to take the opportunity to view the concept designs and provide their feedback to help guide this development, which will deliver benefits for generations to come.”
Member for Namatjira and NT Minister for Logistics and Infrastructure, Bill Yan said the library was a valued hub where locals and visitors can learn, relax, and connect with others.
“We welcome your help to guide the council so our investment delivers a space built for the future needs of the community,” said Mr Yan.
The community will have the opportunity to explore the concept designs and provide feedback in a number of ways, including at an in-person consultation session on Sunday 31 May at the Todd Mall Markets, where the designs will be presented to the public. Residents can also view the concepts at the current Alice Springs Public Library or online via Council’s website.
