Community feedback sought on Launceston tree plan

City of Launceston Council is calling on residents to share their views and help shape the future of the city’s urban forest through the development of the Council’s new Street Tree Master Plan.

The Street Tree Master Plan will guide the planting, care, and growth of trees in Launceston’s streets and public spaces, with the aim of enhancing the city’s greenery for generations to come.

With Launceston’s urban forest currently covering just 19% of the urban area and lacking species diversity, the plan sets an ambitious goal to achieve 40% canopy coverage by 2040, as outlined in the City’s award-winning Urban Greening Strategy.

Residents are being invited to complete a survey to share their insights and ideas. Feedback from the survey will inform the early stages of the Street Tree Master Plan. Later this year, the Council says it will seek further community input on the draft plan to ensure it aligns with local needs and aspirations.

“Launceston’s trees are a really popular part of our city’s identity, and the Street Tree Master Plan will help us grow a more vibrant, sustainable urban forest,” said Mayor, Matthew Garwood.

“We want to hear from our community to ensure this plan delivers maximum benefits for everyone, from cooling our streets to creating welcoming spaces for people and wildlife.”
