A City of Swan resident has been handed an $1,800 fine after being convicted of offences related to a failure to comply with the Council’s annual fire hazard reduction notice.
The Council submitted that the individual’s property was significantly overgrown with dead and dry vegetation, particularly along the external boundaries where there should have been firebreaks, and around the dwelling and outbuildings.
The Midland Magistrates Court imposed a fine of $1,800 and ordered the resident to pay the Council’s costs of $2,500, with fines and costs totalling $4,300.
Council said the outcome sends a clear message to property owners to ensure action is taken annually to comply with the annual fire hazard reduction notice. Failure to comply increases the fire risk for the entire community and can carry significant penalties, as demonstrated by this case, it stated.
The Council conducts annual inspections of fire prone properties, with more than 90% found compliant on first inspection.
This demonstrates the broader community’s strong committment to reducing bushfire risk, the Council said.
