City of Stonnington to repay $600,000 after payroll error

Council CEO, Dale Dickson.

Victoria’s City of Stonnington Council has confirmed it will repay around $600,000 to current and former employees who were paid incorrectly for overtime hours dating back as far as 2019.

In a statement, Council CEO, Dale Dickson said the organisation had “identified and corrected a payroll error” that meant a number of current and former employees were not paid accurately for overtime worked.

The Council has also self-reported the error to the Fair Work Ombudsman, the Council CEO confirmed.

“The error dates back to April 2019 and was found through an internal review. It was caused by a problem in Council’s payroll system’s overtime and penalty rate calculations. This has now been corrected,” said Mr Dickson.

“On behalf of the Council, I express our sincere regret for the error and acknowledge the impact on our current and former employees.”

The estimated total value of repayments, including interest, amounts to approximately $600,000 and all impacted current employees have been identified and contacted directly with personal advice, the CEO confirmed.

“All former employees who are similarly impacted have been identified and will also be contacted and provided with personal advice.”

“We are committed to working directly with all current and former employees who are affected, and the Fair Work Ombudsman as we resolve this matter.”
