Upgrade works worth more than $1.42 million are now underway at Tamworth’s Sports and Entertainment Precinct in a bid to make the important community facility safer and more accessible for pedestrians.
As part of the works, improvements will be made at a traffic roundabout at the front of the Australian Equine and Livestock Events Centre (AELEC), and adjacent to the Tamworth Regional Entertainment and Conference Centre (TRECC) on The Ringers Road and along Longyard Drive.
These improvements include new wombat and pedestrian crossings, the installation of safety fencing and street lighting along with the construction of a 3-metre wide shared path along Longyard Drive.
The upgrades will not only improve safety in the area for both pedestrians and road users but they will also support and encourage exercise through the use of the active transport network, Tamworth Regional Council said in a statement.
Council Manager Operations, Murray Russell said Council was “constantly looking to make our roads and active transport network safer and more accessible”.
“We are currently updating our Active Transport Strategy through community consultation to identify other projects to expand our active transport network,” he said.
NSW Minister for Roads, Jenny Aitchison said as regional communities continue to grow, it’s important that local infrastructure keeps pace with demand and supports safety for pedestrians and road users.
“The upgrade to the Sports and Entertainment Precinct will deliver important safety improvements, whilst enhancing access throughout the precinct for the community to enjoy,” she said.
The construction will be carried out in stages from July through to December this year, with some road closures and traffic control when needed.
This project is jointly funded by the Australian and NSW Governments under the Australian Government’s Road Safety Program. The Program aims to improve road safety by minimising the occurrence of severe injuries and fatalities, with a focus on vulnerable road users like pedestrians and cyclists.
