WA’s City of Melville Council has officially opened the upgraded John Connell Reserve Changerooms in Leeming, which it says will help to support local female participation in sport.
The official opening took place on Friday, with attendance from Riverton MLA, Dr Jags Krishnan, who provided a $625,000 grant to the $1.2 million project, Councillors and staff, and Leeming Sports Association representatives.
The Council says the project has replaced outdated facilities, which primarily catered for male sporting needs.
The facility is now universally accessible, with new change room facilities, universal access toilet, umpires room and storage.
“I’m very pleased that the John Connell Reserve Changerooms have now been upgraded, which will support more female participation in local sport, which we know continues to grow,” said Mayor, George Gear.

“Thank you to Riverton MLA Dr Jags for his $625,000 grant, which has helped this upgrade become a reality.
“The upgrades have provided the Leeming Sports Association with fit for purposes facilities and will encourage the community to get involved with their local clubs.
“We know the important role that sport can play in our physical and mental health and I hope upgraded changerooms help the community to pursue healthy lifestyles.”
The renewal was completed as the City works through the City wide sporting facility change room renewal program which forms part of the Active Reserve Infrastructure Strategy (ARIS).
